LEED Certification – Administration Building, Municipal Services Center

Olathe, Kansas

This 23,000-sf administration building and its surrounding 4.5-acre site, part of the Municipal Services Center complex in Olathe, was the first municipal building in the State of Kansas to achieve LEED certification from the US Green Building Council.

For the City of Olathe, sustainable design was important from the earliest planning stages and was required by the contract. City officials wanted to set an example for the community and for others as well. Sustainable design features include energy-efficient HVAC and electrical systems, Energy Star white roofing, water conserving plumbing fixtures, local/regional materials, native grasses and plantings, and dedicated areas for materials recycling, to name a few.

GBA provided architectural, land planning, landscape architectural, structural, site/civil, and mechanical engineering, and construction administration services as part of a design-build delivery process for the 17-acre services center.

The complex includes the administration building, an operations/vehicle maintenance facility, a welding and storage building, truck wash building, and a fueling station with canopy. The site also includes a cold storage area for over 100 city trucks, an employee terrace area, covered walkways, green space, and a storm water detention pond.
